A Holiday Party hosted by Flotilla 06-07 was held on Saturday, December 2, 2006
from 6:00 to 10:00pm at The Reef restaurant at Annsville Circle, in Peekskill, N.Y.
Forty Division 6 Members, Family, and Friends enjoyed the "all you can eat buffet", auction,
and awards, as well as two great audio/video presentations produced by Bill Smith.
Bill's "23 Heroes" video is a documentary about the
commissioning of a new NYPD Harbor Unit Patrol Launch, named
for, and dedicated to, the 23 Officers of the New York City
Police Department who gave their lives during the 9/11
rescue efforts at the World Trade Center.
His brilliant slide presentation of the Launch 5 mission to
take a group of Veterans recovering from wounds received in Iraq on a trip around
New York Harbor was a stark reminder of the high price of freedom and the great sacrifices
made on our behalf by the members of our armed forces.
Outgoing Flotilla 67 Commander Sandy Weiser was recognized for all his hard work along
with outgoing Vice Flotilla Commander Rick Veit.
Cliff Forrest, SO-AN was recognized for his work on the recent ATONs Workshop.
Frank D. Maresca and Bob Daraio received awards for their work on the National Staff
in the Vessel Examination Department.
Good food and great fellowship with people who share a dedication to boating safety

ATON WORKSHOP

On Sunday, 19 NOV 06, an ATONs Workshop was
given from 0900 to 1500 (including 1 hour set-up and
1 hour clean-up/Instructor review) at Shattamuc
Yacht Club in Ossining, N.Y.

22 Members, 21 from Flotillas 63,64,67,and 68
in Division 6 and 1 from Flotilla 11 in Division 13
attended this 4 hour introduction to Aids To
Navigation training evolution.
The class was taught by Cliff Forrest, SO-AN,
a graduate of the United States Coast Guard ATONs
C-School in Yorktown, VA; Vinny Stafford and Wayne
Spivak, both certified Aids Verifiers (AV); and
assisted by Don Elmendorf, VFC-67 and Bob Daraio,
FSO/AN-06.
Students received an overview of the Coast
Guard's ATON mission, learned how to check to see if
ATONs and PATONs are watching properly, and how to
report discrepancies.

05-06 NOV 06
AUX 10 C-SCHOOL
On Saturday and Sunday, 04-05 Nov 06 Members
of both Division 6 and Division 10 participated in the
AUX 10 C-School training.

The purpose of this training was to qualify additional members of
Div 6 to serve as either primary or alternate Flotilla IS Officers.
Upon successful completion of the session and follow up assignments,
the designated FSO-IS and/or alternate should have the skill,
ability and eligibility to input data to the AUX system for members
of their flotilla.
This in depth look at the AUXDATA system, how
to enter hours, and how to generate reports was taught
by Commodore Arthur P. Reichling, DSO-IS. The program
was hosted by Betsy Blee, VCP-06, at the Pfizer
offices at the IBM Executive Conference Center in
Palisades, New York.
Lynn Glassman, FL-63, Karl Hoedl, FL-64, Milt
McNicholas and Glenn Butler from FL-65, Dick Horton
and Jane Edwards from FL-66, Bob Daraio, FL-67, Kevin
Hanley and Gwen Radloff from FL-68, Tom O'Connor,
FL-104, Larry Orlans, FL 107, and Peter Perfetti,
FL-1020 registered for this difficult training
evolution.

The facility is a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright
style campus nestled in wooded, rolling hills. The
conference room had more than a dozen high speed
internet equipped, state of the art, laptop computers
and a huge electronic roll down screen for PowerPoint
presentations. Pfizer provided lunch on Saturday and
breakfast on Sunday in the conference center catering
hall.
Betsy Blee commented "We hope this investment
will pay off in great returns by increasing our
capability to input data on all our member
activities."

On Monday, 06 November 06 Division 6 Coxswain
Greg Porteus, with Crew Members Paige Flori, Jimmy
Picciano, Skip Mumford, and Doug Brusa, along with
Trainees Don Elmendorf, Charlie Luceno, Gary
Olivier, and Bob Daraio went underway on Launch 5 to
participate in the towing evolution involved in moving
the aircraft carrier, USS Intrepid from her NYC berth on
the Hudson River at 46th Street to dry-dock in Bayonne,
New Jersey for a well deserved refit.
Coast Guard Auxiliary Cutter Lady B was on
hand, along with scores of vessels from the Coast
Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, as well as Federal,
State, and Local Law Enforcement agencies, to support
McAllister Tug's efforts to move the "Fighting Lady"
from the spot she has rested as a floating museum for
the last 15 years.

It was perfect weather for a towing evolution
with the highest tide available for the next full
year.
Unfortunately, the Intrepid decided she was not
interested in leaving that day. Despite the dredging
efforts to loosen the silt around the Carrier and the
force of four huge tugs on the 1000 foot long steel
towing cable, the Intrepid resisted all efforts to
move her.
The event will be rescheduled for a future
date, or perhaps the refit will have to be done on the
Intrepid right where she sits.
Undaunted by this setback, and not about to
waste such a perfect fall day on the river, the Lady B
and Launch 5 engaged in a successful Member Training
towing evolution of their own. Crew Trainees got some
sign-offs, Crew Members completed some Currency
Maintenance tasks and everyone had a great day.

On Thursday, 09 November 06 four members of
the Division 6 Staff; Cliff Forrest SO-AN, Don
Elmendorf SO-MS, Frank Maresca SO-PB, and Bob Daraio
SO-CS, along with at least 20 Members of Division 10,
attended an ATON Bridge Inspection and Survey
Workshop.
This informative training evolution was
presented by Kevin Redden, ADSO-AN Bridges, at the
Oakland Firehouse in Oakland, New Jersey from 1930 to
2130. The Workshop covered all aspects of Bridge
Inspections and Surveys as well as the reporting
procedures and paperwork required.
The training was followed from 2130 to 2200 by
a general ATONs Program discussion with ADSO-AN Sector
NY North, Michael Stephenson, who drove down from
Burlington, Vermont to participate in this event.

U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliarist Rescues Swimmers in Hudson River during MS “Swim Across the
Hudson”
by Andy Powers SO-PA

U.S. Coast Guard
Auxiliarist Jim Picciano with Betsy Blee, Division Vice Captain, and other
members Division 6, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary were providing a maritime
safety patrol for hundreds of MS Society fundraising swimmers and Kayaks
crossing the 3 mile stretch from Emeline Park, Haverstraw, N.Y. to Croton
Point Park on the eastern side of the Hudson River when a marine radio
distress call was heard that a swimmer was in need of assistance. The
swimmer was experiencing cramping in his hips and thighs and because blood
flow is directed by one’s body to an injured area, he was also
experiencing symptoms of cold water physical shock which contributed to
his inability to complete the swim. To exasperate the situation, the
swimmer was located off Croton Point where cross currents and rip tides
create turbulent conditions.
Although Jim’s primary
mission was to provide safe passage for the swimmers by redirecting
recreational boaters from the area and ensuring the channel was clear of
swimmers at times of commercial vessel traffic, hearing a second call that
other safety boaters were unable to assist, Jim called other Auxiliarists
to support his primary area of responsibility and quickly sped his 13 foot
personal water craft (PWC) to the scene of the distressed swimmer where he
boarded the swimmer and raced him to shore for emergency medical
assistance.

Once transferring the
swimmer to the care of the EMTs awaiting their arrival Jim immediately
returned to his primary duties.
Arriving at the Hudson
Channel he encountered several other swimmers in distress due to the
unusually harsh river currents caused in part by the full moon (which
directly affects tides and currents) and the cold, heavy rain runoff
coming down the river. The speed and agility of Jim’s PWC enabled him to
take the swimmers out of the water and transfer them to safety vessels
which brought them inside Croton Point Cover where they could continue
their swim to shore.
The
Coast Guard Auxiliary did an outstanding job providing maritime security
and logistical support to the event. In addition to 5 Coast Guard
Auxiliary facility boats on the Hudson River, communications support was
provided by Karen and Bruce Caldwell (left) and Public Affairs by Andrew
Powers. Vessel facilities diverted numerous recreational vessels from the
swim route while ensuring the safety of swimmers from commercial vessel
traffic.

DIVISION 6 OPERATIONS EXERCISE
On Saturday, August 19, 2006 Over 30 Members, representing
all six Flotillas in Division 6, D1SR participated in
their first ever Division size operations training
exercise. Twelve Operational Facilities were
involved in a search and tracking evolution from
Verplanck to the Tappan Zee Bridge, recovered
simulated suspicious objects, and conducted
seamanship skills drills. PATCOM for this event
was Jon Romero SO-OP. We also had the chance
to test our new communications base station facility, "Radio Ossining",
and practice our radio protocol.

Improvised
explosive devices (IEDs)
-
Safety
issues
-
Departmental
or agency policies to ensure compliance with local requirements
-
Participants
will receive a certificate of completion from New Mexico Tech

awareness level training. (This is not a Bomb Tech/EOD course
!!).
The
instructor was PO Gary L. Olivier of the Rye, N.Y. Police Department.
PO Olivier has attended New Mexico Tech and is a certified N.Y. State
Police Instructor, Instructor Evaluator, and member of United

22-23 APR 06
Striped Bass Fishing Tournament
Over the April 22-24 weekend,
Division 6 members turned
out to provide a presence
and willingness to conduct
vessel safety inspections
during the annual Striped
Bass Fishing Tournament
at the Tarrytown Boat Club
on the Hudson River. Well,
the fish were biting, but the
boaters were not!
(Dick Birgler and Bob Daraio inspect Betsy Blee's Facility)
There were only a few opportunities in the mostly pouring rain and
45 -50-degree temps to lure these intrepid fishermen away from the
big catch. ( One caught a 47 pounder!) At least we had very good
representation from the Division with Betsy Blee, Jeff Grossman,
Bob Daraio, Dick Birgler, Kevin Lustyik, Dick Horton, and
Jon Romero.
We conducted an Operational Facility
inspection, modeled and mentored
how a vessel inspection should be
done on a few of the boats at the
marina and talked with some
prospective members.
While we did not complete as many inspections as we had hoped, the
exercise was not a total "wash out"! In spite of the weather we had a
great Member Training, good public affairs activity, and wonderful
fellowship. - Betsy Blee, VCP
