Since the 1980s, NABET-CWA has represented workers who
perform technical functions, including field camera crews,
at CNN’s New York and Washington Bureaus.

These workers were not employed directly by CNN, but
were employees of various subcontractors that CNN used
over the years.

This situation was insisted upon by CNN to avoid
directly signing a collective bargaining agreement.
NABET-CWA should never have agreed to this arrangement.
The union represented employees at CNN are paying
the price for this long past mistake today.

Late in 2003 CNN terminated the contract with the  subcontractor Team Video Services and made over 250 employees reapply for their jobs as direct employees of CNN. CNN has rehired over 50% of the former employees
but has laid-off over 100 loyal, long-term, unionized  workers, many with over 20 years of service.

A large number of union officers and stewards were also not
rehired.

Despite having retained most of the workers from
these subcontractors, CNN has refused to recognize
NABET-CWA as the collective-bargaining agent for these
New York and Washington workers, and has converted
a unionized technical workforce in those cities into
a non-union workforce.

The employees that have been retained have been
subjected to continuous anti-union rhetoric and captive
audience meetings in order to discourage them from signing
organizing cards. Without 30% of the employees signing,
the NLRB can't order an election.

This could happen anywhere, to any shop, with
management using nefarious, but legal means to eliminate
your union representation.
