GAYLE PALMIERI
Theatrical Wardrobe
Gayle Palmieri is a graduate of the prestigious Theater craft Training Program
at Detroit’s Cass Technical High School. Gayle studied at Wayne State University
before graduating with a degree in Stagecraft Technology from Indiana University
in 1977. Gayle then moved to New York, where she spent some time doing wardrobe,
props, stage management, and electrics in the Off-Broadway scene before choosing
theatrical wardrobe as her craft.
Gayle toured the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East
with companies including “The Eglevsky Ballet”, “Jennifer Muller And
The Works”, and “The John Curry Skating Company”.
Gayle's wardrobe skills have been put to work on Soap Operas at ABC and
NBC, as well as a number of feature films and "Law And Order". She has
dressed the “The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular” and mounted
24 consecutive Broadway shows as an IATSE Local 764 wardrobe department member.
Gayle is currently serving on the wardrobe crew of the Tony Award winning production of “Spring Awakening” at Broadway’s Eugene O’Neil Theater and recently finished replacing all of the hand knit caps for the Broadway company of “Wicked”, as well as making the custom knitwear for the "Wicked" National Tour. Custom projects for other Broadway Shows include 2 replacement snoods for “Kiss Me Kate” and a grey wool rectangular shawl with 4” lace border and a beige/pink/multi triangular lace shawl that can currently be seen in “Phantom of the Opera”.
Gayle has a line of whimsical custom children’s hats including a tomato, strawberry, morning glory, sheep meadow, island, and ocean, with new confections appearing regularly. The newest addition is a line of Fairy Godmother hats using Chinese or Japanese characters. These come with a Fairy Godmother finger puppet.
“Lascaux” a 17x90 rectangular shawl created for the Belmont Childcare Charity Auction at Saratoga 2003, has patterns reflecting the primitive wonder found in French prehistoric cave paintings of horses. This Art piece is knit in wool, cotton, and rayon, lined in silk with 3 original hand-painted Haiku.
“Fishnet” is a wearable art piece created for the 2006 Portable Playhouse Charity Auction. This shawl is lightweight, warm, and designed for every day wear. “Fishnet” reflects every woman’s need to periodically go to the river, cast our net, and see what fate puts in it for us. The shawl is of simple materials; wool, wood, glass, and metal, in a style as timeless as the woman who wears it.
Gayle has been an Adjunct Associate Professor at SUNY Westchester Community College, teaching a Fiber Arts Course and a Seminar called “Backstage On Broadway-A Dresser’s Story”.
Gayle lives in Ossining, N.Y. with her husband Bob Daraio, a video engineer at WPIX.
