CIVIL AIR PATROL SAREX On Saturday, 24 Feb 07 Division 6 Members Bob Daraio, BA-AIE, and Sandy Weiser,
ADSO Aviation, had the privilege to be invited to participate in a statewide Civil
Air Patrol Search And Rescue Disaster Response Drill (SAREX).
The SAREX ran from 0700 to 1800 covering all of New York including Buffalo , Albany ,
Rochester , Binghamton , Long Island, and Westchester utilizing 17 CAP airframes
Incident Commander for the SAREX, the scenario was
a simulated snow/ice storm disaster closing down the
north east corridor.
The mission was to implement the Incident Command
System (ICS) using air and ground assets to assess
damage, provide information regarding people in need
of assistance, and provide real time images of traffic
choke points and alternate routes for
ground based first responders.
We were attached to the CAP NER NY 219/CC Westchester Hudson Composite Squadron
of the South Eastern Group, based out of Westchester County Airport, responsible for
Westchester, Putnam, and Duchess Counties.![]()
The Squadron's three C-172 aircraft based at Westchester Airport flew
14 sorties, each of one hour duration to facilitate crew turn around practice,
with two photo targets to be mapped using their on board Satellite Digital
Imaging System. SDIS allows real time digital images with Lat/Lon positions,
to be acquired and immediately sent via satellite phone to any e-mail
address.
This SAREX provided the opportunity to test each CAP unit's readiness, response time,
communication, command and control systems, as well as providing training sign offs
for Cadets and Senior members at all levels.

The Civil Air Patrol is the volunteer auxiliary of the United States Air
Force, with 56,000 active members, including 26,000 cadets ages 12-21.

Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia , and 5 overseas squadrons with
their 4,000 member owned and 535 corporate owned planes comprising
the world's largest fleet of single engine, piston aircraft. CAP also owns
and operates 1,000 emergency service vehicles.
The CAP operates the Nation's most extensive radio communications

rescue operations, saving an average of 100 00 lives each year.

The CAP runs 100 aerospace education
workshops every year; provides aerial
reconnaissance for homeland security and
counter narcotics missions; disaster relief and
damage assessment; transport for important
time sensitive medical materials and runs a
multi-step Cadet leadership training program

Lots of awards given including one to Jon Romero for Auxiliarist of the year and
to 6-7 for Flotilla of the year. The Immediate Past Commodore, Charlie Sferra,
