Robert Daraio joined the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in response to President George W. Bush calling for every American to volunteer in some capacity in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
In his first 6 months as an Auxiliarist, Robert qualified as a Marine Dealer Visitor, Vessel Examiner and Public Education Instructor; completed AUXCOM; was appointed Flotilla 67 Staff Officer for Marine Dealer Visitors; recruited 12 new members, earning an Auxiliary Recruiting Service Award; wrote and produced 14 Radio Public Service Announcements promoting USCG and USCG Auxiliary Boating Safety; co-hosted a one hour live radio call-in show to promote Boating Safety; trained 10 new Marine Dealer Visitors and 4 new Vessel Examiners; helped teach three 1 day Public Education Boating Safely Courses; and did over 200 Marine Dealer Visits.
He also developed and edited what was at the time the Division 6 website "Ratlines" on-line at www.ratlines.com. Robert Daraio wrote, and sent up the chain of communication, a position paper on redefining the definition of Marine Dealers that became the cornerstone of the new Recreational Boating Safety Program Visitation Program. In 2003 Robert Daraio was elected Vice Flotilla Commander, VFC-67, appointed the Division 6, District 1SR, Staff Officer for Marine Dealer Visitors; won the Division 6 Award for most Marine Dealer Visits, second Sustained Service Award; second Marine Dealer Visitor/Vessel Examiner Performance Award; and shared a Meritorious Team Commendation Award with the rest of the very successful Fleet Week Team.
In 2004 Robert Daraio continued as Division 6 Staff Officer for Marine Dealer Visitors (now District 1SR, Division 6 Staff Officer for Program Visitors); earned his third Sustained Service Award; and a third Marine Dealer Visitor/Vessel Examiner Performance Award, with over 700 Program Visits. He was appointed to the District 1SR Operation Boat Smart Committee, developing and maintaining the OBS web pages for the District 1SR website.
Robert also completed the training for, and participated as, an Instructor for the AUXLAM course given to prepare new, First Southern District, USCG Auxiliary Flotilla Commanders and Vice Flotilla Commanders.
In 2005 Bob was appointed National Branch Chief, Vessel Examination Department, Sport Utility Boats (BC-VES), and District 1SR Staff Officer for Operation Boat Smart. Bob taught the Recreational Boating Safety Instructor Training Workshop, helped write and introduced the new “Smart Start For Paddlers” program at the 2005 District 1SR Conference. He earned his fourth Marine Dealer Visitor/Vessel Examiner Performance Award, second Public Education Instructor Performance Award; and another Meritorious Team Commendation Award with the successful Port Authority Police Boat Crew Training Instructor Team.
Bob is a plank owner of the Auxiliary Firearms Coaching Unit, which augments the Coast Guard with currency maintenance PQS Small Arms Training at Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook. He is one of only two members of the entire Coast Guard Auxiliary certified to teach the "Shoot-Don't Shoot”, Judgmental Firearms Simulation Course (FATS).
Robert Daraio served as National V-Department Division Chief for Vessel Examination (DVC-VE) in 2006, responsible for supporting the activities of approximately 3,400 Vessel Examiners across the country and responsible for coordinating and editing the new Vessel Examination Manual, released in 2007.
Bob was appointed a Branch Chief in the National Public Affairs Department (BC-AIV) and served as part of the instruction and support cadre for the AUX-12 Public Affairs C-School at N-Train 2006. He also served as the Division 6, D1SR, Staff Officer for Communications Services (SO/CS-06), maintaining the award winning Division 6 website.

In 2006 Bob led his Flotilla in five out of thirteen Flotilla 67 program activities MEP/MS, PV, PA, PE, and VE. He led Division 6 in MEP/MS, PV, and PA and was second in CGS, PE, and VE. This level of activity earned Robert his fifth Marine Dealer Visitor/Vessel Examiner Performance Award, second Public Education Instructor Performance Award, and fourth Sustained Service Award.
Bob successfully completed the AUX-12 Public Affairs and AUX-10 AUXDATA/AUXINFO C-Schools, as well as the ATONS Workshop, and all the, pre-proctored exam, educational requirements for the Marine Safety Trident Training Ribbon including the Good Mate Course, , ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700, and ICS 800 in 2006.
In January 2007 Robert Daraio passed the tests to become a Coast Guard Licensed OUPV Captain and completed his Coast Guard Near Coastal Master of 50 Ton Vessels Captain's License upgrade with the Sail and Towing Endorsements in March 2007. He also earned a U.S. Coast Guard Port Engineer Certificate and became certified as a Coast Guard Auxiliary Boat Crew.
Bob is a member of the National Association of Charterboat Operators (NACO) and The American Professional Captains Association (APCA).
Bob served as a member of the National Public Affairs Department Staff in 2007 (BA-AIE) and served as the ATONs Staff Officer for Flotilla 67 (FSO-AN), prior to his transfer to Flotilla 16-07, D5N.
In 2007 Robert earned his sixth Marine Dealer Visitor/Vessel Examiner Performance Award, third Public Education Instructor Performance Award, fifth and sixth Sustained Service Awards, and shared a third Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation with the rest of the successful U.S.C.G. Auxiliary Port Authority Police Boat Crew Training Instructor Team. In 2007 Robert Daraio, along with his brother Steven Daraio, and friend Frank D. Maresca became the first members of the U.S.C.G. Aux. 5th Northern District to earn the new U.S.C.G. Aux Recreational Boating Safety Award Device.
