Rotary Club Awards $1,000 Grant to
Launch 5 Foundation

The Board of Directors of the Ossining Rotary Club were so impressed with last Wednesday's speaker, Greg Porteus, and his Launch 5 Foundation that they awarded the Foundation a $1,000 grant on the spot.Top Of This Page

The Launch 5 Foundation is dedicated to performing search and rescue missions, safety patrols and training on the Hudson River, between the Tappan Zee and Bear Mountain Bridges.  They perform their all-volunteer services on the Henry Walburger, a restored 1964 NYPD Harbor Patrol Boat named after a police officer that died in the line of duty.

Mr. Porteus and his volunteer crew member, Paige Flori, told of rescuing a family of four when their jet skis capsized, of recovering a lost body, of assisting in U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescues, and of training public safety officers in the work they do.

The Rotary grant will be used to purchase firefighting and medical equipment for the boat.

The Rotary Club of Ossining, founded in 1921, is one of 31,000 Rotary clubs located in 166 countries and dedicated to service.  By 2005, Rotary's centenary year, Rotary clubs will have contributed  $500 million to the cause of eradicating polio in the world.

HUDSON RIVER POKER RUN

Racing BoatThe event began at 10:00 am on Saturday June 19th with a Captain’s Meeting at Liberty Landing Marina just opposite the Manhattan’s Financial District.  All powerboats were invited to discover this experience of a lifetime!  There was a five-hour limit to complete the breath taking 75-mile course. The rain date was  Sunday, June 20th, lucky for us it was not needed.  Four clearly marked world class pace boats led each group of participants to a breath taking start up the Hudson River at 10AM.

The Four stops were:  Liberty Landing Marina, The Ossining Boat and Canoe Club, The Haverstraw Marina, and the finish line at Liberty Landing Marina.Racing Boat

Immediately after the exciting 75-mile course there was an awards ceremony at 2 PM at Liberty Landing Marina. There were refreshments, food,  entertainment and dancing.  Facilities from the USCG Auxiliary met on station 1000 hrs at Buoy G15.  Contact Jim DiPelesi to get more details.Top Of This Page

HISTORIC SHIPS VISIT ENDS

The Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mary II leave New York HarborTop Of This Page

Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Mary IISunday April 25, 2004 was a historic day in New York Harbor. The Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mary II, following a week long visit, set sail for Southampton to the roar and lights of a wonderful fireworks display. For the QE II, this marks the ship's final trans-Atlantic crossing; for the QM II, the dawn of a new era. Either way, the last time two "Queen" ships of the Cunard fleet will be in N.Y. harbor, most likely in a lifetime.                                                                                                                                                                                    Lustyik, K. and Tagni, P.Jeff Grossman
